Report claims Italian giants have added 'remarkable' Wolves man to list of summer targets

After enjoying an impressive 2023/24 campaign, Wolves will be braced for a busy summer in the transfer window, with AC Milan now reported to be circling one Molineux star.

It’s been a season of defying the odds for Gary O’Neil at Wolves, as the Englishman has consistently squeezed the best out of his depleted squad in the Premier League this term.

Considering that the former Bournemouth manager took charge at Molineux just days before the start of the campaign, the 40-year-old has done an immaculate job at utilising his limited resources.

In the summer of 2023, Wolves found themselves in a crisis, as key players exited with no replacement due to financial concerns, resulting in Julen Lopetegui dramatically leaving his post.

Having little preparation with O’Neil before the season commenced, the squad were spoken of as relegation candidates as a result of the club’s woes in the transfer market however, the boss has turned the nightmare into a dream for the Old Gold.

It’s only recently that Wolves have suffered due to their squad shortages, with a list of key names absent due to injury, giving the manager fuel to push Fosun in the summer to ensure his team is replenished.

That being said, Wolves will now have the challenge of retaining players and their manager, with reports in Italy linking O’Neil with a potential job prospect.

Gary O’Neil has been linked with the AC Milan managerial job

Reports emerging from Italy, via la Repubblica, have named O’Neil as one of the candidates to take over from Stefano Pioli in the summer.

The report covers speculation over Pioli’s future, particularly after Milan’s loss to Inter last night, seeing their rivals claim the Serie A title.

O’Neil is mentioned as being one of many on a list of potential successors to Pioli, detailing his success at Wolves this season as a talking point.

AC Milan admiration for Gary O’Neil tells of his success at Wolves

It was only last month that the Wolves boss was pinpointed as a rumoured target for Manchester United, with it unsurprising that other clubs are admirers of the young manager.

The 40-year-old has made the Old Gold significantly better, playing an attractive and exciting standard of football, as well as promoting higher performances from individuals who weren’t as imposing in Lopetegui’s set-up.

Lauded as ‘remarkable’ by talkSPORT’s Alex Crook for his work at Molineux this season, O’Neil has reinjected the faith into the squad on show at Wolves.

It will be interesting to see how the rumours regarding the boss’ link to the Italian giants play out, particularly with Pioli’s future still under question.

Just like the reaction to the Manchester United links, O’Neil’s primary concern will be finishing the 2023/24 campaign on a high with Wolves, in what has been an impressive season for the club and manager.
