The Premier League is often at its best when mid-table clubs have superstar players.
Indeed, some of the all-time great Premier League cult heroes are players who played for clubs that, with all due respect, were a tad below their level.
The likes of Juninho at Middlesbrough, Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace, and, of course, Jay-Jay Okocha at Bolton were all beautiful to watch.
However, perhaps the best of the bunch in this category of player is Dimitri Payet.
The French midfielder was unbelievable during the 18 months he was at West Ham, and speaking on the BBC Match of the Day Top 10 Podcast, Micah Richards has now been discussing the midfielder’s legacy.
Richards stated that Payet had so much more to give in England, claiming that if he’d signed for a club like Manchester City or Arsenal, he would’ve hit even higher heights.
Dimitri Payet would’ve been great for Arsenal
Richards spoke about the midfielder.
“Amazing, I played against him at Villa, he gave me a torrid time for the first 20 minutes. Yeah, he could go both ways, quick, you didn’t know which way he would go, he could do everything,” Richards said.
“I think it’s down to the team you’re in as well, if he’d gone to a City or an Arsenal, City have the ball for 70% of the game. I think Payet could’ve played for a top six team when he was here, definitely.”

West Ham fans will tell you that Dimitri Payet could’ve played for any team in Europe at his peak.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that Payet was one of the best players in England during his time at West Ham, but, sadly, he didn’t get a move to a top club.
Payet’s legacy is as a West Ham cult hero and a Marseille legend, but, in another world, he could’ve been a superstar for one of Europe’s top clubs.
West Ham sold Payet for £25m, and perhaps Arsenal or City should’ve taken him at that fee.
