'Tempted': ESPN pundit says Liverpool should sign £77m forward to play with Diaz and Nunez next season

Liverpool are set to make a number of changes over the summer transfer window.

Obviously, the main difference between Liverpool of 23/24 and Liverpool of 24/25 will be the man in the dugout.

After almost nine years of superb service to the club, Jurgen Klopp is on the move. Someone different will be in charge at Anfield.

Quite who that is remains to be seen. After reports last night that it’s unlikely to be Ruben Amorim, intrigue surrounds the Reds decision. They could reportedly yet make an ‘unexpected’ appointment.

In the midst of all of that though, Liverpool are also having to deal with the immediate futures of some of their biggest players. Perhaps the most talismanic of all – Mohamed Salahlooks likely to leave for Saudi Arabia. And if he does, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol has told the Reds exactly who to buy.

Liverpool urged to sign Victor Osimhen

Before Liverpool even think about any transfers, they need to sort out their managerial candidate. The clock is ticking in that respect and FSG need to get a move on.

But assuming that all goes off without a hitch, there are some big questions to answer over the first-team squad for next season.

If Salah does go then he’ll have to be replaced. There’s no way Liverpool can swallow losing his virtually guaranteed 25 goals plus per season. And according to Nicol on ESPN FC, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen would be the man to bring in.

“I would be more tempted to go for somebody like Osimhen and use the other ones wide,” said the pundit when asked who could replace Salah.

Put to him whether Darwin Nunez should actually be used out wide instead of through the middle for Liverpool then, Nicol agreed.

“Yes, I think so,” he said. “It looks as though he [Nunez] enjoys running at people, and he likes running in behind. So, yeah. Diaz on the other side and (Osimhen through the centre). And Jota in any of the three spots.”

Should Liverpool sign Victor Osimhen

It looks very likely that Osimhen will actually be on the market this summer. After a year of ‘will he won’t he’ at Napoli, the 25-year-old will surely finally be on the move.

However, we’re not sure that Liverpool will see things the same way as Nicol. Sure, a front three of Diaz, Osimhen and Nunez looks pretty incredible on paper. But we need a left-footer.

Of course, a lot depends on how the new manager will want to play. Without knowing who’s coming in, it’s hard to predict how they’ll line up. Maybe they’ll want to go with a front two, maybe just one. Who knows.

If they do want a new striker, then Osimhem may come into the running. Liverpool have seemingly been keen on him in the past. But having signed for around £77m four years ago, been excellent in Italy and still only 25, we don’t see the Reds shelling out.
