Leicester boss Enzo Maresca should sign 'one of the best talents' Celtic have ever produced - opinion

Leicester City are well-placed to gain automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca‘s side were 2-1 victors against West Bromwich Albion on the weekend, moving them up to 91 points, two wins away from sealing a return to the top flight.

City chiefs will be hard at work behind the scenes preparing for the summer transfer window, which is fast approaching.

If they are to realise their promotion hopes, they should look to add depth to their attacking ranks, especially out wide.

Abdul Fatawu and Stephy Mavididi have hardly had a rest this season as Maresca has few options to choose from on the flanks.

With that said, here is one jet-heeled wide player they should target.

Mikey Johnston is enjoying a phenomenal loan spell at West Brom and is rapidly becoming one of the most feared wingers in the Championship.

The 25-year-old has netted seven times in 16 outings and was virtually unplayable when he faced Leicester at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

Johnston is contracted to Celtic and manager Brendan Rodgers has hailed him ‘one of the best talents’ the club has ever produced.

Speaking earlier this month, Rodgers said: “What he has demonstrated is no surprise. He is one of the best talents to come out of this academy, he is quick, direct, can score goals.”

That was certainly on show against The Foxes as on multiple occasions he danced his way through challenges to create dangerous opportunities.

With his Baggies loan spell set to expire at the end of the season, perhaps Leicester can convince Celtic to sanction a permanent deal.

How Mikey Johnston would fit in at Leicester City

Leicester are expected to be pretty limited financially in the transfer window, as they contend with Profit and Sustainability concerns.

Johnston, though, could be available for an attainable fee as he has a Transfermarkt value of £1m.

Admittedly, after his fruitful spell in the West Midlands, Celtic will likely want triple that, but even then, it seems a feasible deal to complete and one that is relatively low risk.

The 10-cap Republic of Ireland international can operate on either flank, though, his most favoured role is on the left, meaning he’d be competing against Mavididi.

Whilst he wouldn’t start over Mavididi, Johnston would certainly play his fair share of games when Maresca opts to rotate.

Further, Mavididi has been out of form at times this season but with no one really pushing to start ahead of him, he’s been an everpresent.

Signing Johnston would provide great competition for the former Arsenal academy star, so City chiefs should certainly consider launching a proposal.
