The UK's asylum scheme, which was agreed in April 2022, sends anyone who arrived in Britain illegally after Jan. 1, 2022, to Rwanda, some 4,000 miles (6,400 km) away.

The whole immigration plan has faced a lot of opposition, especially from Conservatives, who contend that it would compromise judicial independence and put people at risk. Last November, the Supreme Court declared the asylum policy unlawful.

However, the deportation plans to Rwanda have finally been approved by parliament. Under the new law, any asylum seekers who arrive illegally in Britain will be sent to Rwanda.

Back in June 2023, a comprehensive government analysis of a high-stakes commitment to address record numbers of people arriving in tiny boats, showed that the UK’s proposal to transport asylum seekers to Rwanda will cost £169,000 ($215,035) per person.

The British government has also proposed a plan to pay asylum seekers up to £3,000 ($3,836) apiece to migrate to Rwanda. To be eligible, the asylum seekers must voluntarily opt for the option.

The supposedsafety Rwanda is offering has been questioned by international human rights organizations like Human Rights Watch (HRW), which argues the country “cannot be considered a safe third country to send asylum seekers.”
