'Gary O'Neil is...': Journalist drops update on Wolves boss after surprise Liverpool interview claim

It was boldly claimed earlier today that Gary O’Neil had been for an interview with Liverpool about replacing Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

O’Neil has done a tremendous job at Molineux this season, and has exceeded all expectations after replacing Julen Lopetegui just days before the campaign started.

O’Neil has taken Wolves up to 11th in the table, and the club are actually unlucky to be as low as that given how many rotten VAR decisions and injuries there have been.

He’s done a wonderful job all things considered, and there have recently been some reports about other clubs looking at him.

Firstly, there was talk of West Ham United coming calling, with David Moyes under pressure.

Then, somewhat bizarrely, it was suggested Manchester United wanted to speak to O’Neil about joining them and forming a coaching team.

Today, it was boldly claimed that Liverpool have interviewed O’Neil – and now another claim has been made this afternoon…

As everyone knows, Jurgen Klopp is leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

The Reds are considering their options at the moment, after their top target Xabi Alonso recently declared that he would not be leaving Bayer Leverkusen.

Ruben Amorim has been heavily linked. But today, a very surprising claim was made that the Reds have actually interviewed O’Neil.

But this afternoon, James Pearce who is the Liverpool reporter at The Athletic, has rubbished the earlier claim, writing on X: “Gary O’Neil is not under consideration for the #LFC job.”

This update will be welcomed by Wolves fans, with many delighted with what he has done so far at the club.

Fosun need to back Gary O’Neil at Wolves, or he could end up leaving

So there doesn’t appear to be anything in the O’Neil to Liverpool links – but this should serve as a warning to Fosun.

It is not out of the question that other big clubs could come in for O’Neil this summer, given what he has done with limited resources.

If O’Neil feels like the owners are not backing him this summer, then it cannot be ruled out that he would consider his options. As much as he loves Wolves and is grateful for the opportunity he has been given by the club, he’ll surely agitate for an exit if he doesn’t have the tools to work to his full potential.

His stock is high at the moment, and he would be snapped up by another club in a heartbeat if Wolves don’t give him the right platform to build.
