N.J. man sentenced to 55 years for fatal shooting during botched robbery

A Camden man has been sentenced to 55 years in prison for gunning down a 21-year-old Philadelphia resident during a botched robbery in 2021, authorities said Tuesday.

Antony Shields, 23, was convicted of first-degree felony murder, aggravated manslaughter and second degree conspiracy to commit robbery by a jury on Jan. 30.

Shields and Jony Ramos, 24, were accused by authorities of shooting Alex Fernandez during a robbery on the 1700 block of South 7th Street around 2 a.m. on Feb. 4, 2021. Fernandez was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Cooper University Hospital, according to authorities.

Shields’ defense attorney Terrell A. Ratliff said Tuesday that he thought the sentence was a little harsh, but commensurate with similar offenses. He added that he would have liked to see the judge weigh Shields’ personal history and background more in issuing a sentence.

The status of Ramos’ case was unclear Tuesday afternoon. An attorney listed for him did not immediately return a request for comment.

Shields must serve a minimum of 85% of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole under the No Early Release Act.
