‘Left-field’: Alasdair Gold says Tottenham could make a signing that surprises people this summer

Tottenham have plenty of work to do in the transfer window this summer.

Indeed, as good as Spurs have been at times this season, their distinct lack of depth has been a continuous issue.

They’re lacking options in both their defence and their attack, while the midfield area has become more and more of an issue as the season has gone on as inconsistent performances from Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr have started to become problems.

So, what will Spurs do to address that problem?

Well, speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast, Alasdair Gold has suggested that Tottenham could make a surprise signing in the defensive midfield position.

Tottenham could make a surprise signing

Gold spoke about Spurs’ summer plans.

“Number six is a more difficult one really. In terms of I feel like a number six will be a real data signing, someone who can do a bit of everything. They’ve been heavily linked with Ederson and it’s a funny one with him because depending on who you speak to whether he’s a natural number six or not,” Gold said.

“I’ll say Ederson for that role for now, but I feel like maybe that number six role will be more of a data-based one that people are surprised by and it comes from left-field, we will see.”

Tottenham have to get it right

It’s interesting to hear that Spurs are planning on springing a bit of a surprise this summer, but they absolutely have to get this right.

The one thing holding Tottenham back this season has been a lack of defensive security, and if they can fix that, they could be contenders next term.

Of course, finding such a player won’t be easy, but with Johan Lange on the case, Spurs should be able to uncover a defensive midfield gem.
