'It was good to see': Michael Ball says £80k-a-week Everton player proved him wrong against Forest

Everton were impressive against Nottingham Forest, and good value for their 2-0 win.

The Toffees will happily sneak off into the night with their much-needed three points, allowing the defeated side to bemoan VAR and the refereeing display.

After all, Sean Dyche has been left red-faced far too often this season from officiating for him to get drawn into other club’s squabbles.

He will instead want to focus on the positives, especially ahead of tomorrow night’s Merseyside Derby.

And from his side that featured last weekend, one man certainly stood out.

Michael Ball left stunned by Idrissa Gana Gueye’s performance

Writing in his column for the Liverpool ECHO, Michael Ball’s post-match assessment of the Forest win was one filled with positives.

After all, it is hard to cast a scrutinising eye over such a monumental result, which has taken them five points clear of the bottom three.

One player in particular did catch his eye though, with Idrissa Gana Gueye singled out for praise.

However, such adulation is marred by the lack of faith shown, although he can be forgiven for such a suggestion regarding his shooting.

The former Everton defender wrote: ‘Even though I knew the outcome of Idrissa Gueye’s goal, when I watched it back later, I was still shouting at the television telling him not to shoot! You’ve got to buy a ticket and I’ve said so many times that we don’t punish teams by popping the question in such circumstances.

‘Like Barry Horne and Gareth Farrelly, people were probably thinking along similar lines when the ball dropped at their feet but Gueye asked the question and thankfully it ended up in the back of the net. Full credit to him because I thought he was everywhere and it was good to see him back in top form.’

Idrissa Gana Gueye could be key for Everton vs Liverpool

The outstanding trait of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool has always been their energy.

They have been a relentless force for many years now, and despite the immense physical toll put on the players, they have seldom buckled.

It is actually quite admirable how he has forged a team with such quality yet such a workmanlike spirit, when at times Everton have lacked both of those traits.

However, in Gueye, they certainly have the living embodiment of the latter.

Whether it be during his first or second stint at Goodison Park, the £80k-a-week machine’s energy has never been matched, even as he creeps ever closer to 35 years old.

And with his stunning showing last Sunday, which even left Ball shocked, there is hope that he could maintain such form and prove to be the difference tomorrow night.

After all, they will need his relentless running if they are to match the Reds and avoid being overran in the midfield.
