'There's always something': Pundit claims 26-year-old Arsenal player never seems to have any composure

John Giles has criticised one Arsenal regular, claiming that they seem to have almost no composure in any situation out on the pitch.

It has been another brilliant campaign for Mikel Arteta’s side. Heading into their clash with Chelsea on Tuesday night, Arsenal find themselves top of the Premier League table.

They have been on a remarkable run over the last few months. Arsenal have now kept six clean sheets in a row in away games in the Premier League.

The last time David Raya had to pick the ball out of his net in an away top-flight fixture came when the January transfer window was still open.

Arsenal star accused of having no composure

Of course, the entire backline has to take a lot of credit for that. But it seems that not everyone has been convinced by the Arsenal defence.

Gabriel Magalhaes has developed into an outstanding performer for Arsenal. However, speaking on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, John Giles claimed that he has a real issue with the Brazilian’s temperament.

“He’s always seeming to want to kick somebody. He doesn’t seem to be composed in any situation,” he said.

“He’s good at certain things. He goes and meets the ball. I think he’s a good winner of the ball. But at a price. There’s always something. The week before, he made a terrible pass when they were playing at home against Villa.”

Statistics show how Gabriel Magalhaes has improved

It does seem to be an unfair criticism of Gabriel, particularly when you consider his performances this season.

He does have his moments where he is shaky. But, alongside William Saliba, he has developed into a real leader.

Only Saliba and Declan Rice have completed more passes than Gabriel in the Premier League this season, according to FBRef. Meanwhile, he is actually sixth in the Arsenal squad for passes into the final third.

Of course, centre-backs are always likely to lead the passing statistics in the modern game. But it does help show how reliable Gabriel has become.

He never shies away when Arsenal need someone to get onto the ball. And there is a reason that Arteta has built the defence around him over the last few years.
