Superb Indonesia U-23 Seal Knockout Berth with Jordan U-23 Battering

A stellar performance by Marselino Ferdinan propelled Indonesia U-23 into the knockout phase of the 2023 AFC U-23 Asian Cup on Sunday, following a magnificent 4-1 triumph over Jordan U-23 at the Abdullah Bin Khalifa Stadium.

After securing their inaugural victory against Australia three days prior, the tournament newcomers ensured their fairy-tale journey would persist into the quarter-finals by clinching progression from Group A, securing the second spot behind Qatar.

Requiring only a draw to secure advancement into the last eight prior to this match, Indonesia's red-clad squad demonstrated their determination from the outset in front of a supportive crowd of 5,632.

Leading the attacking line, Rafael Struick was heavily involved early on and played a crucial role in the opening goal after being brought down by Amer Jamous in the penalty area. Marselino, who had previously scored Indonesia's first goal in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, calmly converted the penalty to give his team the lead in the 23rd minute, kickstarting a stellar performance from the KMSK Deinze forward.

Marselino continued to shine throughout the match, contributing to the second and third goals as well. Meanwhile, Jordan struggled to threaten Indonesia's goalkeeper, Ernando Ari, with only one shot on target in the first half.

Indonesia extended their lead in the 40th minute through Witan Sulaeman, courtesy of a sublime assist from captain Rizky Ridho. The third goal, in the 70th minute, was a thing of beauty, with Marselino finishing off a flowing move with aplomb for his second goal of the night.

Despite Jordan pulling one back in the 79th minute, Indonesia quickly reestablished their three-goal cushion through Komang Teguh, who capitalized on Pratama Arhan's trademark long throw-in.

The final whistle sparked celebrations among Indonesian fans and players alike, mirroring the achievement of their senior counterparts in the Asian Cup.

Their reward is a thrilling encounter against South Korea in the quarter-finals, with the young Taeguk Warriors sealing top spot of Group B with a 1-0 win over Japan, where the Young Garuda will look to etch their names further into the history books.
