'Probably': Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon now shares what his favourite position is

Newcastle United player Anthony Gordon has now shared what his favourite position really is.

The 23-year-old has been Mr Reliable for Newcastle United this season, with Eddie Howe not being able to select the winger on just two occasions. And they were both because of suspension, rather than injury.

Anthony Gordon has suffered multiple injury scares and taken a lot of bumps, but has bounced back every single time. During a season in which so many Toon players have been ruled out with injury, Gordon has made availability his strongest quality.

And because of that availability, Eddie Howe has had to rely on Gordon to play in various different positions.

The former Everton player has played across the entire front three this season, while he have seen him play consistently through the middle at international level. That is where he was used as England Under-21s won the Euros last summer.

Gary Neville asks Anthony Gordon what his favourite position is

Gordon has been deployed all over the pitch and been incredibly successful in every role he has been given, but what is his favourite position? That is what Gary Neville wants to know.

Newcastle’s number 10 has appeared on The Overlap podcast with the former Manchester United defender, who asked Gordon if left wing is his preferred position.

“Most comfortable, yeah [on the left wing],” he said.

“But it probably depends who you ask. A lot of people prefer me in all different places, because they’ve seen me play striker, left, right, 10 – left eight [in the middle] I’ve actually played at some point.

“I played number nine for England at the Euros and I absolutely loved it. But I’d say left probably makes me feel the most comfortable.”

Eddie Howe is using Gordon on the right for Newcastle currently

Gordon prefers to be on the left of attack, which is where he has played the majority of his football for Newcastle United this season. When the Magpies have had the majority of their attackers available, Howe has opted to play Gordon on that side.

However, he could be set for a different role between now and the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

The England international started on the right against Tottenham, allowing Harvey Barnes to play on the left. That is also his preferred position, and he got the nod to play there by Howe.

But Gordon was just as impressive on the right, getting a goal and an assist from open play – as well as an assist from a corner.

While it is not his preferred position, Gordon proved that he can be potentially even more dangerous on the right wing.

Former coach believes Gordon will change position

But Gordon’s former coach David Unsworth actually believes that he will change position again in the future. He previously stated that he does not see Gordon as a winger. Instead, he thinks he will primarily play through the middle in the coming years.

It will be interesting to see if that comes to fruition, and it is certainly a possibility given how much his finishing has improved. Gordon is more clinical now, and has scored 11 goals in all competitions this season.

He has played as a striker for Newcastle this season, when Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson were both unavailable. That is another example of why Gordon is so valuable to Howe, as he can do a top level job in multiple positions. What a player.
