Patrick Bamford shares what he thought of Crysencio Summerville the first time he saw him in Leeds training

Patrick Bamford has shared what he thought of Crysencio Summerville the first time he saw him in Leeds United training almost four years ago.

Summerville made the switch to Elland Road back in the summer of 2020 following Leeds’ promotion to the Premier League, initially joining the U23s side.

Having proved himself as too good for that level for a couple of years, Summerville was then gradually eased into first team football at Leeds, with last season the first time he was really able to show what he can do.

After deciding to stay at the club despite relegation and bids from Premier League sides, Summerville has now established himself as Leeds’ main man, something which he has always wanted to do since arriving.

After winning the Championship’s POTS last weekend, he moved his goal tally up to 19 in last night’s 4-3 win over Middlesbrough, while also providing an assist for Willy Gnonto.

Rightly or wrongly, Summerville has always had question marks against his attitude while being at Leeds. Jesse Marsch would often tell the press that the likes of Willy Gnonto would have to keep him in check.

In an interview with Sky Sports after last night’s match, Leeds striker Patrick Bamford was asked about the quality Summerville possesses after yet another man of the match display.

Bamford spoke in great detail about Summerville and took the 22-year-old’s time at Leeds right back to the start, suggesting there was actually some potential concerns as recently as last season.

However, Bamford says it was clear right from the start just how talented he was, and with those attitude issues now behind him, he believes he can go to the very top.

He said: “With Cry we’ve known for three or four seasons. I remember when he first signed, even in training you thought ‘wow, this kid’s good.’ It was just about him knuckling down in his attitude and getting the other side of it right really.

“Even last year I think there were a few question marks around it but he’s come back in the summer and honestly, it’s like a switch has just been turned on and it’s for him and everything’s coming together. We always knew he was capable of this and he’s going to go on to big things in the future I’ve no doubt.”
