Tata Martino has claimed Inter Miami have a player who can be as good as Newcastle's Miguel Almiron

Tata Martino has claimed Inter Miami have one youngster who could one day be as good as Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron.

The Argentine manager is regarded as one of the most influential coaches in MLS, with Martino leading Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup with Almiron as one of the Five Stripes’ key players before moving to Newcastle two years later.

With the Paraguayan international now a cult hero at St. James’ Park, Almiron’s success from making the move to MLS to the Premier League has shown that the American top-flight can produce talent that can one compete with the best.

And Inter Miami could now have a player who might develop better than Almiron.

Diego Gomez likened to Almiron by Inter Miami manager Martino

Speaking on MLS’s Extratime podcast, pundit Andrew Wiebe revealed that Martino recently compared Diego Gomez to Almiron, with the Inter Miami manager a big fan of the 21-year-old Paraguayan midfielder.

Although a more central player, Gomez has shown this season he can be an attacking and creative force alongside the likes of Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, with Europe an obvious next step for the youngster in the next 12 months.

Wiebe said: “I spent the week looking at Gomez, I was on a call with Tata with other broadcasters and we asked ‘how good can this guy be,’ and he straight up said ‘potential-wise, Miguel Almiron,’ it got tweeted out and people thought we were insane.

“But he’s 21-years-old, Almiron was 23 in his first year in MLS, and Gomez from the perspective of press, the ability to stretch the field, the development we’ve seen with the ball in creating goals but also being the final runner, you can understand why if you give this guy two more years, whether it be in MLS or not, he can develop.”

Gomez could one day surpass Almiron’s legacy in Europe

Gomez is one of the most exciting prospects in MLS and a player who looks destined to move to Europe sooner rather than later, with the Inter Miami star capable of making the switch already in his career.

And there’s a real chance that the midfielder could one day surpass what Almiron has managed in the Premier League with Newcastle, with the winger playing a key role in helping the Magpies qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last year.

Indeed, at 21, Gomez has the world at his feet, and if the midfielder can return from injury sooner rather than later, there’s a good chance that the youngster can head to Europe later this year and hit the ground running for a top side.
