Speeding driver charged with manslaughter in crash that killed new mom, officials say

A New Jersey man who authorities allege was speeding when he caused a head-on crash in Atlantic County that killed a new mother has been charged with manslaughter.

Karina E. Castillo was driving her car west on on Black Horse Pike in Hamilton at 2:15 p.m. on April 3 when it “made contact” with an SUV driven by Stephen Sirch, officials said. The contact forced Castillo’s car into the eastbound lanes, where her car collided with an oncoming vehicle, officials said.

Castillo, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sirch, 30, of Voorhees was arrested Monday and is being held at the Atlantic County jail, the prosecutor’s office said. An attorney for Sirch wasn’t listed in court records of 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Castillo, of Pine Hill, is survived by her infant daughter and fiancé, according to an online obituary. She is also survived by her parents, brother and sister, the obituary said.

Castillo worked as a social worker for the New Jersey Department of Children and Families.

Sirch and the other driver — a 40-year-old woman — as well as two passengers in her car suffered minor injuries, police said.
