Eddie Gray says Leeds United have a 'tremendous' young star that scares the life out of defenders

Monday night’s win at Middlesbrough has given Leeds United more hope in the race to finish in the top two, after going into the match with doubt surrounding the chase of both Ipswich and Leicester.

Leeds went into last night’s game without winning in the previous three, picking up just one point. On the other hand, Middlesbrough had won five of the last nine – remaining unbeaten. But Leeds secured a win.

Even after Isaiah Jones gave Boro an early lead. Leeds quickly retaliated, Georginio Rutter winning a penalty for Cree Summerville to score and then, Patrick Bamford bundling home a Junior Firpo cross.

A cross likened to that of Stewart Downing, by Billy Sharp. It was Summerville that took the game by the scruff of the beck, though. He wasn’t done with the penalty. He took his tally to 30 goals and assists.

He created Willy Gnonto’s effort and our third with a gorgeous reverse pass, the Italian netted. Leeds got a fourth when Summerville cut inside and curled one into the far corner – a wonderful goal, his 20th.

Summerville took the game by the scruff of the neck and put Boro to the sword, throwing Leeds back into the mix for automatic promotion. A huge win, with Leicester winning on Tuesday night vs Southampton.

The Saints capitulated and eventually lost 5-0 to Southampton, basically confirming Enzo Maresca’s side as title winners in the Championship and for Russell Martin’s Southampton, it is going to be the play-offs.

What Eddie Gray said about the Leeds winger this morning

Speaking to TalkSPORT on Tuesday morning after Leeds were victorious over Carrick’s side – Elland Road legend Eddie Gray was asked about Summerville, who has struggled of late, scoring two in the prior 11.

He raved about the Dutchman, telling Jeff Stelling an Ally McCoist that he is “tremendous” – and scares the life out of his opponents: “He is a tremendous player for us. He can score goals, he can find people.

“He puts defenders under pressure. He runs at them and takes them on, it puts defenders under serious pressure when you get somebody with that ability taking people on, and he has been great for us.”
