In his 2023 memoir, Spare, Prince Harry claimed that both he and Prince William were "unhappy" about Prince Charles marrying Camilla Parker-Bowles in the spring of 2005.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold dished: "It was also complete nonsense that William and Harry were unhappy. I promise you that wasn't the case. I was there."
After nearly eight years following Diana, Princess of Wales' tragic death, a then-Charles, Prince of Wales, petitioned his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, to allow him to marry his mistress and his ex-wife's longtime rival, Camilla Parker-Bowles. The duo were granted the right to wed in a registrar's office on April 9, 2005, with a "blessing service" afterward at St George's Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle.
Harry, who was only a few months removed from his worldwide scandal of wearing a Nazi uniform to a costume party, beamed with happiness and smiles alongside his brother, during the service.
At that time, Prince William and Harry were both supportive of the match, which surprised many when the King's youngest child wrote so "horribly" about his stepmother in Spare.
"There is virtually no chance of mending the damage between his two sons. The Queen is also still very deeply hurt by the comments made about her in Spare, and that’s another obstacle for Charles to overcome," a palace insider spilled last November.
The source further revealed that Harry "thinks it should be Diana" as his father's "rightful queen," despite the fact the pair divorced one year before her 1997 death.
"The problem is that Harry and Meghan have caused so much damage, it’s hard to imagine how to repair it. But I’m sure that the King would like a solution," veteran royal author Tom Bower dished. "Charles has not only got William and Kate [to think of] but he’s also got Camilla, who was very insulted by Harry and Meghan too, so that makes it a great problem for him."
Since Charles III came to the throne nearly 20 months ago, his reign has unfolded, with the drama of Harry and Meghan becoming a running thread in his kingship. Although the Sussex/royal feud has been prominent since 2020, matters took a "nuclear" turn when the Montecito duo released their Netflix docu-series, Harry & Meghan, in December 2022. The ex-working royals criticized the monarchy, and Meghan mocked the late Queen Elizabeth II.
But royal analysts say that nothing compared to the revelations in Spare, which reportedly "still reverberate to this day." The fifth in line to the throne laid into his brother and sister-in-law while characterizing his stepmother as "dangerous."
