Humphrey Ker shares what he overheard Championship club saying about Wrexham's Paul Mullin

Wrexham have secured promotion from League Two and Phil Parkinson’s men have been coming in for huge praise once again.

It was only a year ago that Wrexham were celebrating promotion from the National League, finally making it out of non-league football.

Wrexham have now achieved back-to-back promotions, reaching League One much quicker than probably even Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds anticipated.

There is still one game to go until the summer really begins as Wrexham take on Stockport County this weekend.

This will be one more chance for Wrexham fans to show some appreciation for these promotion-winning players before the seconds ends.

Each and every Wrexham players deserves the praise coming their way and we actually saw two players named in the League Two Team of the Season.

Humphrey Ker on Paul Mullin

Goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo was given the nod between the sticks whilst Elliot Lee was included in the midfield at the EFL awards earlier in April.

Wrexham fans may feel that some other players deserved spots in the team; Max Cleworth in defence? Andy Cannon or James McClean in midfield, perhaps?

Then there is Paul Mullin, who wasn’t included as Salford City’s Matt Smith and Macaulay Langstaff of Notts County were named as the two strikers.

Mullin had a somewhat slow start to the season, at least by his high standards, but he boasts a record of 0.74 goals per 90 minutes – a better output than Smith, Langstaff or any other of the League Two top scorers.

Mullin has been outstanding in the run-in, racking up 10 goals in his last 10 games alongside two assists.

The Wrexham ace certainly deserved to be in the equation for Team of the Season and Player of the Season, the latter of which was won by Notts County’s Jodi Jones, ahead of Wrexham’s Lee and Mansfield Town’s Davis Keillor-Dunn.

Wrexham’s executive director Humphrey Ker has now told Men in Blazers that he went to the EFL awards night and was seated next to Blackburn Rovers’ table.

Ker overheard people on Blackburn’s table – including top scorer Sammie Szmodics – questioning just why on earth Mullin wasn’t up for League Two Player of the Season, never mind being included in the Team of the Season.

Ker praised Mullin for his ‘bananas’ goalscoring record in a Wrexham shirt, even if his exploits this season didn’t lead to awards or nominations this time around.

“Paul has, in characteristic Paul fashion, managed to miss a bunch of games, then have a difficult patch, but still wind up as basically the division’s best striker,” said Ker. “Funnily enough, this is some hot gossip that I’ve not shared with anybody but I went to the EFL awards and our table was right next to Blackburn, who obviously beat us in the FA Cup.”

“When the nominees for League Two Player of the Season came up, I could hear all the people on the Blackburn table like ‘what? Where’s Mullin? Why’s Mullin not on that list?’, including Sammie Szmodics, who knows a thing or two about scoring goals. Awards are awards and they’re not always the best barometer of who’s done what, but Paul’s contribution this season has, again, been… bananas, the amount of goals he’s scored in three seasons for us,” he added.

Mullin surely desperate to prove himself in League One

Mullin has bagged goals in the National League and League Two for Wrexham but is now jumping up to League One level.

The Wrexham hitman has only ever had one stint in League One and it didn’t exactly go well.

Mullin played 20 games and scored only three goals for Tranmere Rovers in the 2019-20 campaign before being loaned back to League Two with Cambridge United.

Wrexham’s promotion now gives Mullin another chance at League One success having previously barely featured at this level.

Now 29, Mullin really needs to show that he has improved his game and is now ready to shine in League One after all – and Wrexham fans will be backing him to keep racking up the goals.
