Emmerdale Gus Malcolms actor Alan McKenna's real life and where you recognise him from

By Nia Dalton

Emmerdale fans may recognise villain Gus Malcolms from other rival soaps.

Actor Alan McKenna reprised his role as Rhona's ex-husband Gus in the ITV series last year and has since been at the centre of many dramatic storylines. Gus was charged after using frozen embryos that belonged to him and Rhona without her permission to welcome a baby with his wife Lucy, who sadly died during daughter Ivy's birth.

Since then, Rhona has been keen to help raise her biological child, but Gus tried to flee to France with Ivy behind her back, resulting in Rhona taking her. As his court date approaches, Gus has suddenly had a change of heart and claims he wants Rhona and her partner Marlon's help with Ivy. But could Gus be planning a swift exit?

Viewers are convinced Gus has a devious plan to swipe Ivy and escape before his hearing. One fan posted on X last night: "Is Gus doing a runner?" Another agreed: "I wouldn't trust Gus further than i could throw him." And a third added: "I really really don't trust Gus, he's gonna take ivy and run... I just know it." As the heartbreaking story unfolds, we take a look at Alan's life off-screen...

Alan is a well-established actor with over two decades of experience on screens. He is also a screenwriter and a producer in TV and film. Despite his recognisable face and successful career history, Alan prefers to keep his personal life out of the spotlight and lives a very low-key life away from cameras.

But the star has appeared in dozens of popular shows, including many rival soap operas like Coronation Street and EastEnders. He's also starred in Holby City and Waterloo Road. He played the role of Patrick McGuire in Doctors for 12 years between 2000 and 2012. Outside of soaps, Alan has appeared in Doc Martin, DCI Banks, Midsomer Murders and The Bill.

Alan played Albert Square favouriteBradley Branning's boss, Tony Andrews, in EastEnders between 2006 and 2007. His main purpose was to give Bradley a promotion, but Tony's appearance was short-lived as he decided to relocate the company to Singapore and that was the last time he was seen.

Then in 2017, he joined Corrie for a year and played drug lord Ronan Truman who tragically lost his son Cormac to a drug overdose. When Ronan found out Cormac's pal Ryan Connor failed to call an ambulance, which could've saved his life, he tried to take revenge and ploughed his car into Ryan. But it ended in Ronan's death.
