The Michigan football team won the ‘Maizie’ award for the best team of the year during the 2023-24 academic calendar. On the gridiron, the Wolverines finished 15-0 with a national championship and Big Ten title. They beat rivals Michigan State and Ohio State to highlight the regular season, before taking down Alabama and Washington in the College Football Playoff. It marked the Big Ten’s first national title since 2014 and Michigan’s first since 1997.

Michigan football also won two more ‘Maizie’ awards, with quarterback J.J. McCarthy being named Best Fall Male Athlete and wide receiver Semaj Morgan being tabbed as Male Rookie of the Year.

Michigan basketball landed a commitment from 2024 unranked guard Lorenzo Cason out of Lakeland (Fla.) Victory Christian. Cason was a Florida Atlantic signee under new Michigan head coach Dusty May but asked out of his letter of intent from the Owls’ program.

“I chose Michigan because of Dusty,” he told On3. “It’s hard not to want to play for a coach who believes in you. He took me with him from FAU, and I think that’s says enough as it is. The staff is amazing, but I know the culture is going to be even better. As well as the style of play, just getting up and down the court in transition is a huge differentiator.”

The decision came down to Michigan and Florida. He also had offers from USF, Seton Hall, Georgia Southern, Murray State and others.

As a high school senior, Cason averaged 24.5 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.4 assists per game his last year at Victory Christian, including a 57-point outburst in a win over Auburndale. He scored 42 in the second half alone.

McCarthy was featured on ABC WXYZ ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft, for which he is widely considered a projected first-round pick.

Quote Of The Day

“I started working with Marco his freshman year. Honestly, the main reason I continued to help him navigate through all of this stuff is because of his character and not his ability to play a sport. He’s very punctual. He’s an old soul, as some would call it. His parents have done a wonderful job. The family aspect they have around him is great. He’s a phenomenal kid. He’s decades ahead as far as how he carries himself. More than anything, that was the first thing that stood out to me — how he carried himself and treated those around him.”
