'A risk': Dutch journalist describes what worries him about Arne Slot moving to Liverpool

At this moment in time, it looks very likely that Arne Slot will be Liverpool’s next manager, but according to one journalist, it could be a ‘risk’ for the Reds.

A little over 24 hours ago, few Liverpool fans will have been an expert on Arne Slot. The 45-year-old Dutchman has become the frontrunner for the Liverpool job seemingly out of nowhere.

But with the latest developments surrounding his situation, it now seems very likely that Slot will be Jurgen Klopp’s successor.

Liverpool have clearly made their choice and are now looking to accelerate the deal to get things wrapped up, before any other team swoops in ahead of them.

Dutch journalist’s honest verdict on Arne Slot moving to Liverpool

Clearly Slot’s move is not just a major topic in Liverpool circles at the moment but also back home in the Netherlands.

Slot has developed an affable reputation in his homeland. He is highly regarded for the work he has done at Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar.

Both clubs’ supporters adored him during his stints. His demeanour and playing style appeals to fans, and that will make him a popular figure at Liverpool.

Although there is no denying his appointment would come with some risks. Dutch journalist Sjoerd Mossou has highlighted this as well.

“It seems great to me: Arne Slot at Liverpool. Wonderful, we would like to follow that.” Mossou said on the podcast Algameen Dagblad.

“I do believe that you can work in an excellent organization at Liverpool. That is a club where every coach wants to work. I especially wonder whether they would dare to do it, with a trainer of Slot’s stature, with a trainer that no one knows.

“That has been done before in the past, and has often proven to be a good choice, but it has also failed sometimes. There is certainly a risk when you take a trainer who comes from the middle bracket of Europe.

“He can vary and he is able to adapt and pivot matches. If you analyze Slot down to the last decimal point, and what he has done with this material, because let’s not forget, they are of course good players by Dutch standards, but they are not European top, then we can conclude that he is a good trainer is. But that seems pretty crazy to me. The question is more: how high is he on everyone’s list?”

Is Arne Slot really a risk for Liverpool?

Michael Edwards and the data team will have done their research. Slot clearly seems to be their favoured candidate.

But there are so many variables that data cannot account for. The reality is nobody would have been a guaranteed success to come in after Jurgen Klopp.

Any manager would have been a risk, given the current market. Even Xabi Alonso, who would have been many peoples’ favoured candidate.

You just got to have faith it works out. There is definitely great potential in Slot. If he can get things right, this could be another really entertaining period for Liverpool.
