'True legend of television' dies as tributes pour in - It's a 'sad day' for long-term fans

Battlestar Galactica Terry Carter has sadly died at the age of 95. The star is said to have “died peacefully” in his New York home on Tuesday.

The TV star was known for his role as Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the series McCloud and Detective Colonel Tigh in the original Battlestar Galactica.

Remembering Terry Carter as he sadly dies aged 95

Carter was born in Brooklyn, New York on December 16, 1928. 28 years later, he became one of the first black actors to become a sitcom regular, as he landed a role as Private Sugarman on The Phil Silvers Show.

In 1965, he became the first world’s first black TV anchor newscaster, for WBZ-TV Eyewitness News in Boston.

He then took to Hollywood, starring alongside Van Johnson and Ray Milland, and the 1974 film Foxy Brown.

Terry played the role of Sergeant Joe Broadhurst in the detective series McCloud from 1970 to 1977. Arguably, his most widely-known role is Colonel Tigh in the popular science-fiction TV series BattlestarGalacticain 1978.

He also made a cameo appearance in Richard Hatch’s Trailer Battlestar Galactica: Second Coming in 1980.

In his later days, he retired to his hometown of New York. He is survived by his wife Etaferhu Zenebe-DeCoste, and his 2 children Miguel and Melinda, as well as a stepdaughter and granddaughter.

Tributes pour in for the star

As the news circulates, fans and friends have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to pay tribute to the legendary actor.

“The Treksperts mourn the passing of Terry Carter, the great Colonel Tigh in #BattlestarGalactica 1978. He was a terrific actor and even more terrific human being. When Adama hears about this, he’s going to go crazy,” one user penned.

“Rest in Peace TerryCarter, famous for his role in #BattleStarGalactica. 95 years old, what an age. Met him a couple of times and he was without any doubt one of the nicest actors I have ever met. A real gentleman. Thanks for the great memories ‘Colonel’,” a second wrote.

A third commented: “He was a true legend in the world of television. I can just imagine him up in TV heaven, charming all the angels with his wit and talent. Rest in peace, Terry, and keep entertaining us from above!”
