'Told you': Bitter Andy Goldstein spouts more nonsense after Unai Emery signs new Aston Villa contract

It has been a great few weeks to be an Aston Villa fan because lots of things are going right everywhere you look.

Positive results in Europe, edging closer to a top-four finish in the Premier League and a real belief that this could be a season to remember.

On Tuesday, Aston Villa topped all of that off by announcing that Unai Emery has signed a new contract.

It puts an end to speculation or anyone deciding to talk about the Spanish coach possibly leaving and taking soon-to-be free gigs at Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona or even possibly Manchester United.

Emery joined Villa in 2022 when Steven Gerrard was sacked and he has seen a seismic change at the club, with the team going from relegation battlers towards Champions League football.

But that hasn’t stopped people like Andy Goldstein from suggesting on talkSPORT that the Villa boss would walk out of the door if a team like Man United came knocking.

These comments were made before he signed a new contract and his partner in crime, Darren Bent, was always quick to shut it down.

And when yesterday’s news broke, the former striker was once again keen to remind the radio host ‘I knew he weren’t going to Man United’.

But that didn’t stop Goldstein, who is a Man United supporter, from still being bitter about it all and struggling to admit that he was wrong, as he waffled on talkSPORT (23/04/24 at 6:05 pm).

Villa fans told him that Emery wasn’t going anywhere and they have been proven right. Players might sign a new deal, and then move on pretty quickly, but it hardly ever happens with managers!

“I knew he weren’t going to Man United, I told you that,” chirped Bent in the background.

Goldstein then stated: “Loads of people on the back of that news went ‘uh, see!’, as in, I said a week ago that if Man United come in. Firstly, it’s very easy after you have had news confirmed to go ‘told you’. It’s very easy.

“Also, let me tell you now. That means nothing. I have seen so many players move after a big deal. Maybe he will stay at the club. But just because he has signed an extension, it just covers Aston Villa. That’s all it does.”

Bent added: “I just can’t see him leaving Villa anytime soon. It seems to fit. They are playing really well. Got through to a European Cup semi-final. They are talking to the master when they are talking about European competitions. The highest league finish for a long, long time. It’s been a wonderful season for Aston Villa. He has made Villa Park a fortress. It just fits. Villa are a massive club, don’t get me wrong, but there are bigger clubs, the likes of Barca, Madrid and Man United. I get all of that. At some point, he might move on. But right now, Villa, a huge football club, in the Champions League, won the competition before already.”

Unai Emery is here for the long-term

First of all, the season isn’t up yet and Villa still have a massive task to cross that finishing line.

Win the Europa Conference League and follow it up by finishing fourth, then the celebrations can start.

If that happens, then it will just be the start. The Villa owners, this manager and the ambition of the club is huge.

Let the outside media talk, let them doubt everything around the club. Villa will continue to do the talking on the pitch and get the respect by winning on the field of play.
