The future of Barcelona manager Xavi is set to be decided very soon after months of uncertainty around his position.
Xavi Hernandez announced in recent months that he intends to depart at the end of what has been a disappointing season for the Blaugrana, having disappointed both domestically and in Europe with no chance of any trophy success.
However, it seemed that President Joan Laporta and members of the Barcelona hierarchy were keen on keeping him, and trying to convince the legendary midfielder to stay.
In recent days, the possibility of Xavi changing his mind appeared to be on the cards, but brutal defeats to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid to end their hopes of silverware this season have now changed the picture, and the Spaniard looks almost certain to leave.
Xavi almost certain to leave Barcelona
Xavi today held internal talks with Barcelona, who now appear to have changed their stance and are open to his departure, despite Laporta still insisting that he stays.
“After internal talks today, Xavi and Barcelona have still no agreement to continue together. Laporta insists to keep him but remains strong possibility for Xavi to leave the club at the end of the season with Barça now considering other candidates. Final decision, soon,” Fabrizio Romano posted on X.
What happened between Xavi and Barcelona in recent days?
SPORT have now explained that Xavi’s position has taken a surprise U-turn in recent days. The Barcelona board changed their path from wanting to keep him, to accepting that a departure may be better, whilst Xavi also appeared to be close to changing his initial position and staying at the club he became a legendary figure at.
When Xavi announced that he would leave, Barcelona were reportedly calm about the situation as they believed he could stay. Now, they appear more keen to try a different coach following the disaster in the Champions League.
The coming hours will see Barcelona’s hierarchy, including Deco, make a decision on Xavi, with the likely outcome that he departs at the end of this season.
