Exclusive: What could happen at Aston Villa now after Morgan Rogers transfer success

Aston Villa are enjoying a fine season under manager Unai Emery.

Villa are currently fourth in the Premier League and have a Europa Conference League semi-final against Olympiacos on the horizon.

To add to that, beloved manager Emery has just signed a new contract that ties his future to the Villa Park side.

It is certainly a good time to be a Villa fan, with the attacking talents of the likes of Ollie Watkins, Moussa Diaby and Leon Bailey all impressing in the famous claret and blue.

However, another attacker who is having a huge impact in the side is Morgan Rogers.

The winger joined the club from Championship Middlesbrough in January and Aston Villa News spoke exclusively to HITC Football transfer expert Graeme Bailey to see whether the EFL market is one the club could explore again in the summer.

When Rogers arrived at the club in January he was very much viewed as one for the future.

The 21-year-old had over 60 Championship experiences prior to making the move according to Transfermarkt, but the step up to the Premier League is not an insignificant one.

On that basis, Rogers was not expected to have a big role to play for what remained of this season.

However, his form has been impossible to ignore and it already looks as though Villa have a real talent on their hands.

The move has shown that there are real gems to be found in the EFL.

When asked whether he feels Villa could explore the EFL avenue again moving forward, transfer guru Bailey said: “I think that’s very possible, Villa had a very good scouting network before Monchi came in.”

He did caveat that with the potential issue of shopping in England’s lower leagues, adding: “I think the problem with shopping in the Championship, especially now, is it’s not cheap. You’re paying English tax.

“It turns out that the Rogers deal was done very well, but you’re still having to pay £15 million for a player that Middlesbrough got for very little.”

Whilst they will not want to pay over the odds, Bailey confirmed Villa will not be perturbed by cost if they feel a deal is right as he said: “Villa have firmly got their eyes on the football league and if there’s something there, they won’t hesitate in doing it.”

Of course, not every deal is likely to have as immediate an impact as Rogers.

The winger is thriving in an exciting Villa attack with his influence growing on a weekly basis.

According to Transfermarkt, Rogers has two goals and one assist in just six Premier League starts, but a deeper look at his numbers shows just how positive a start to life he has had at the midlands club.

Sofascore shows that Rogers has converted 20% of the shots he has taken since joining Villa in January and scores a goal every 262 minutes.

In his goalscoring performance against Bournemouth last time out, the England under-21 international scored despite only registering an xG of 0.25, made one key pass, completed two of his three dribbles and had 41 touches.

These are impressive numbers from a player who is already taking on more and more responsibility.

It is an exciting time at Villa and it could get even better if they can find another EFL star in the summer.
