Phil Parkinson should look at signing ‘quality’ Wrexham target set to become a free agent - opinion

Transfer speculation continues to circulate Wrexham following their promotion to League One and Phil Parkinson should go for a ‘quality’ striker who is set to become a free agent this summer.

Wrexham are an attractive proposition at the moment and following their promotion to the third tier, Phil Parkinson‘s men have only heightened their profile.

Accelerated by the deep pockets of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, the Reds boast one of the biggest budgets in League One.

This has seen the club get linked with Notts County goal machine Macaulay Langstaff, although to prise the 27-year-old to Wales, the Hollywood superstars would have to smash the club’s transfer record.

Indeed, it would be more cost-efficient for the club to shop for bargains this summer, namely Arthur Okonkwo from Arsenal and Peterborough United’s Jonson Clarke-Harris on a free transfer.

Clarke-Harris is an “outstanding” goal scorer at League One level and represents the level of talent available in the market, as does one Sheffield Wednesday striker.

Wrexham target Lee Gregory looks set to leave Sheffield Wednesday

Wednesday striker Lee Gregory has become an outcast at Hillsborough under German tactician Danny Rohl.

Although the inventive manager is inspiring the Owls to Championship survival, he’s doing so without the man who helped fire them into the second tier.

Gregory scored 11 goals in 41 League One appearances as Wednesday earned promotion through the play-offs, and the 35-year-old even scored a vital goal in the thrilling play-off semi-final comeback against Peterborough United.

Yet to feature in a matchday squad under Rohl in 2024, the veteran striker looks set to leave Hillsborough once his contract expires and that could open the door for Wrexham to pounce after being linked with him in January.

Why Wrexham should sign Lee Gregory

Wednesday attempted to shift Gregory off the wage ball in the January window as Derby and Wrexham both showed an interest.

Sadly, in the case of Derby, the Championship side demanded a wage fee that didn’t warrant taking him on loan for six months but capturing him on a free transfer could be huge.

Wrexham have built up a rapport of signing proven EFL players, including Paul Mullin, Elliot Lee, Steven Fletcher and James McClean. Capturing Gregory would only add to that impressive list having demonstrated his “quality” over the years.

The Sheffield-born sharpshooter has plundered 62 goals in 152 appearances in League One and would provide Parkinson with a different option to either play alongside Mullin or become a backup.

Unlike physical strikers Ollie Palmer and Fletcher, Gregory is nimble, great at operating on the last defender’s shoulder and running in behind, providing the Reds with an option to play on the counter.

The only downside to signing the forward is his age, with Fletcher and Palmer in their thirties while Mullin turns 30 this year.

Notwithstanding that, Gregory would be an excellent option to bring in for the short term as Wrexham look to acclimatize to League One.
