'One of their most consistent and best players': Paul Merson hails £40m midfielder Spurs reportedly want to sign

Tottenham Hotspur are likely to bolster their ranks when the transfer window opens in summer.

Spurs have improved since last season, but there’s still some work to do with regards to the quality and strength in depth of their squad.

Midfield is an area where Tottenham could strengthen, amid speculation linking Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg with a move away from Spurs.

Now, Paul Merson has spoken about a Tottenham target who looks set to move this summer, the pundit claiming he’s one of his club’s “most consistent and best players”.

The player in question is Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, who has been a key player for his team but remains linked with a move to Spurs.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea could potentially push the England international towards the exit door soon after the season ends.

This is because the Blues need to sanction outgoings before June 30 to ensure any funds they receive go into the current year’s accounts.

What has Paul Merson said about Tottenham target Conor Gallagher?

Merson, writing on Sky Sports, criticised the Blues for their transfer business, and was not impressed over what could happen to Gallagher this summer.

“It’s a waste of time talking about who Chelsea could sign to make things better,” wrote Merson. “How can they?

“They’ll have to sell their homegrown players like Conor Gallagher, who’s played every game and captains the team. He’s been one of their most consistent and best players.

“They’ll probably be able to sell Gallagher for £40-50million and then because of the silly rules they’ll be able to buy someone from abroad for £100million.

“The player they are going to buy isn’t going to be better than what he is. That would just sum Chelsea up. It’s a bad cycle they have put themselves in. I don’t know what they were doing.”

At just 24 years of age, Gallagher already captained Chelsea and is very much in the England picture.

He’s still not near his prime yet and Ange Postecoglou would no doubt take him to the next level.

If Chelsea are willing to sell him, particularly for as low as £40million, then Spurs really need to take advantage.
