LSU has landed a young point guard out of the transfer portal in 5-foot-10 guard Mjracle Sheppard from Mississippi State, LSU announced on Wednesday evening.
Sheppard is a former four-star recruit in the 2023 class who spent just one year at Mississippi State before entering the portal. Originally from Kent, Washington, Sheppard attended Montverde Academy and was the No. 86 overall prospect in the class with offers from Florida, Georgia, Xavier, and others.
In her lone season with the Bulldogs, Sheppard appeared in all 35 games with one start, playing 17.7 minutes per game and averaging five points per game on 43.2 percent shooting from the field. She totaled 72 assists to 50 turnovers with 48 steals as well, proving to be a versatile player for a Mississippi State team that ended the year 23-12 overall and 8-8 in SEC play. She’ll have three years of eligibility remaining.
Since signing Jersey Wolfenbarger from Arkansas in March, the Tigers have been quiet on the portal front, hosting a handful of players, but remaining selective with clear needs, including point guard. Now, LSU adds a wave of transfers solidifying its backcourt.
Where does this put LSU now?
LSU’s roster now includes: Flau’jae Johnson, Aneesah Morrow, Mikaylah Williams, Last-Tear Poa, Sa’Myah Smith, Aalyah Del Rosario, Amani Bartlett, Jada Richard, Jersey Wolfenbarger, Kailyn Gilbert, Shayeann Day-Wilson, and Mjracle Sheppard.
That’s now four point guards with Poa, Sheppard, and Richard, as LSU adds more ball handlers to help run the offense alongside the talented trio of wings in Williams, Johnson, and Morrow. With 12 scholarship players, there’s still room to add more experienced talent as the Tigers look to get back to the Final Four in 2025.
LSU ended last season with a 31-6 record with a loss in the Elite Eight to Iowa, followed by Angel Reese declaring for the WNBA Draft and Hailey Van Lith entering the transfer portal. Freshmen Janae Kent and Angelica Velez also entered the portal, leaving an already thin LSU roster in need of help in a hurry.
Fortunately, few teams across the country have utilized the transfer portal better than Kim Mulkey and her staff, reeling in big names year after year from Alexis Morris and Angel Reese to Aneesah Morrow and Hailey Van Lith. Now, we’ll see where LSU goes next as it builds its 2024-25 roster.
