N.J. doc who prescribed opioids without examining patients sentenced to prison

A doctor with offices in Cherry Hill and Toms River who admitted prescribing addictive opioids to patients she didn’t physically examine was sentenced last week to two years in prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of New Jersey.

Felicia E. Gonzalez, 65, of Toms River, pleaded guilty last year to three counts of unlawful distribution of controlled substances, the office said. She was sentenced on April 16 in Camden federal court.

Gonzalez prescribed oxycodone to three patients she didn’t examine, authorities said. She also did not develop treatment plans for them or assess them for drug dependence, federal prosecutors said.

She was previously nationally banned from two large pharmacy chains related to her prescribing practices but continued to prescribe addictive opioids without performing the minimum assessments required by state safety regulations, investigators said.

She hid her actions by falsifying her medical records, claiming to have performed examinations when she had not, the office said.
