Manchester United have a new top goalscorer for the 2023/24 season, but it’s close.
This was the night Rasmus Hojlund has been waiting for since suffering his untimely injury in February, when he was in the best form of his budding Manchester Untied career.
Hojlund got back on the scoresheet in Manchester United’s win over Sheffield United, getting on the end of a late cross from Bruno Fernandes.
But if there was one negative for Hojlund, it’s that he lost his spot as Manchester United’s top goalscorer for the season.
Bruno Fernandes overtakes Rasmus Hojlund as top scorer
Bruno Fernandes scored twice against Sheffield United, increasing his own personal tally to 15 goals for the season.
He had previously been level with Hojlund on 13 goals, catching him up after a spree in recent games.
Fernandes struck one from the penalty spot and another from outside the box, which put Manchester United 3-2 up.

This is not Fernandes’ best scoring season, that came in 2020/21 when he managed to score 28 goals.
There is still time for Hojlund to reclaim top spot, with five Premier League games left, and the FA Cup final.
Hojlund will hope this goal sparks a run of strikes similar to his spree earlier in 2024.

Bruno Fernandes’ set up Hojlund’s goal to increase his own assist tally for the season. Predictably, he is out in front.

Fernandes’ top season for assists was also 2020/21, where he managed 18. It is worth pointing out United had Europa League football that season, reaching the final.

With 26 goal contributions for the season, Fernandes is enjoying a strong campaign, and you would not bet against him surpassing 30.
