Fernandes will get the plaudits, but 110-touch star with flawless stats was world-class v Sheffield - opinion

Manchester United ran out winners against Sheffield United at Old Trafford, but once again made it hard work for themselves.

Erik ten Hag‘s side found themselves down not once, but twice on the night after two sloppy goals put the rock-bottom sitting Premier League club in the ascendency.

Thankfully, Manchester United have a little secret weapon, that goes by the name of Bruno Fernandes.

He dragged the Red Devils through this fixture and will understandably get the plaudits.

Bruno Fernandes pulled Manchester United through

As many times this season, the club captain simply dragged Manchester United over the finish line as they beat Sheffield United 4-2.

He was the heartbeat of the United side, working harder than anyone else on the pitch, but also cropping up with vital goals when it mattered most.

After Bruno’s two strikes, including one wondergoal, and an assist – he is now the club’s top goalscorer, overtaking Scott McTominay.

His teammates and even former teammates raved about his performance. And rightly so. He epitomised the Bruno Fernandes United fans have learned to grow and love against the now newly relegated Blades side.

He was also seen trying to help Ethan Wheatley on his debut to score a goal. Our captain. Bruno’s phenomenal performance was reflected in his stats on the day.

  • 90 minutes played
  • 2 goals
  • 1 assist
  • 9 chances created
  • 4 times dispossessed
  • 110 touches
  • 11 passes into the final third
  • 9.5 rating

But whilst he’ll deservedly take the credit… one Manchester United first-team squad member deserves recognition on the night.

Harry Maguire with another blinder for Manchester United

Harry Maguire played his heart out once again for the Red Devils. The England international was simply immense at Old Trafford on the night.

As he has been for weeks. Maguire has slowly turned himself into one of United’s most consistent performers in recent weeks and is reaping the rewards.

He’s also become a bit of a goalscorer, which is nice to see considering how dominant he was from corners during his Leicester City days.

His stats on the night, again, were world-class – well in H!

  • 90 minutes played
  • 1 goal
  • 91% passing accuracy (91/100)
  • 1 penalty won
  • 100% shot accuracy
  • 110 touches
  • 100% tackles won
  • 100% ground duels won
  • 100% aerial duels won

Has Maguire played himself into next season’s squad?

With so much up in the air around Carrington next season – has Maguire done enough to keep his place in the United squad?

In our opinion, yes. But whether he starts is a different story. Maguire is definitely a useful asset and gets what it means to play for United.

A lot depends on the manager, but we expect the £80m man to stick around for the 24/25 season.
