Report: Tottenham open talks to sign £30m defender, could repeat Guglielmo Vicario trick

Tottenham could now be ready to repeat their Guglielmo Vicario success having started talks to sign a talented Serie A defender.

Thanks to the presence of Fabio Paratici at the club, Spurs have an excellent grasp of the best talents in Italian football.

Two of the club’s key signings this season, Guglielmo Vicario and Radu Dragusin have arrived from Italy, joining a host of players before them.

Destiny Udogie, Dejan Kulusveski, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur are all other success stories that have arrived from the Serie A, and the club won’t necessarily stop there.

Tottenham are thought to be in a very strong financial position this summer, and Ange Postecoglou’s squad will see the benefit.

Perhaps Udogie’s injury heading into this weekend’s north London derby demonstrates exactly where strengthening is needed.

Neither the Italian or Pedro Porro have sufficient alternatives in the team, meaning either Ben Davies or Emerson Royal will be asked to do a job.

That being said, according to a report by Calciomercato, Tottenham could also be set to deliver Postecoglou the extra central defender he’s been craving.

Tottenham interested in signing Serie A defender Alessandro Buongiorno this summer

According to the report mentioned, Tottenham have now begun initial talks with Torino for defender Alessandro Buongiorno.

The 24-year-old left-footed centre-back has been excelling in the Serie A this season and is also attracting interest from AC Milan and Napoli.

The report remarks that Spurs would do exceptionally well to beat the Italian clubs to the deal, but do credit the possibility.

Buongiorno is said to have an asking price of £30m this summer, a fee that shouldn’t be prohibitive for Tottenham.

It seems as if Torino’s price is well known, perhaps Tottenham’s interest therefore indicates that they would consider that a fair price for the defender.

Spurs do now have sufficient cover for Romero on the right with Dragusin recruited in January, but Micky van de Ven doesn’t have an obvious alternative.

Davies is playing utility man for now, but Tottenham would surely prefer to have more specialised cover.

All that being said, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp did make a comment about Tottenham immediately after his side’s defeat last night.
