Andre Onana can no longer achieve what David de Gea did for Manchester United last season

Andre Onana can no longer do what David de Gea did for Manchester United last season.

Flashback to the summer of 2023, Erik ten Hag makes a big call to shun club legend David de Gea and spend £47m on Inter Milan keeper, Andre Onana instead.

Since joining Manchester United, Onana has been through ups and downs. The Cameroonian shot-stopper endured a hideous Champions League campaign but has since found his feet in the Premier League.

But despite being one of Manchester United’s most consistent performers as of late, he certainly didn’t paint himself in glory against Sheffield United on Wednesday night.

Andre Onana makes a critical mistake vs Sheffield

In the 35th minute of the game, Onana tried to pass the ball out to Diogo Dalot as left-back, with what ended up being a bit of a hospital pass.

Jayden Bogle quickly anticipated this, latching on to the loose ball and bearing down on the United goal, before cooly slotting past a helpless Onana, leaving Old Trafford stunned.

It was a moment to forget for Onana, but it also had further implications on his season’s hopes.

Andre Onana now can’t do what David de Gea did last season

The goal conceded against Sheffield meant that it was now in fact mathematically impossible for Onana to obtain the Golden Glove in the Premier League.

With just five games left to go in the English top flight, it is now out of the question that the Manchester United shot-stopper on 8 can catch David Raya of Arsenal, who currently sits on 14 clean sheets.

David de Gea won the award last season with the Red Devils, obtaining a whopping 17 in Ten Hag’s inaugural season. Here is how it ended up last campaign, with the Spaniard a cut above the rest.
