Arsenal have now done something they never managed in the Premier League to aid title push

Arsenal have broken several records with their incredible performances in 2024, but it still remains to be seen whether these will be rewarded with a trophy.

Mikel Arteta’s side currently have four games left, but these include tough trips to face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

The Gunners are currently top of the league, three points ahead of Liverpool, and four ahead of Manchester City, but Pep Guardiola’s side have two games in hand, and therefore need to drop points between now and the end of the season if Arsenal are to beat them to glory.

However, despite the disadvantage on points, Arsenal do have one advantage over Man City and Liverpool, as they have put themselves in astrong position with their performances in 2024.

Arsenal handed themselves goal difference advantage in Premier League title race

Arsenal lead the Premier League in goals scored, goals conceded, and therefore goal difference, and this could prove to be significant.

Their goal difference of +56 is 12 goals above Man City, and 15 goals above Liverpool, with both contenders unlikely to catch Arsenal in this regard.

This means that, if Arsenal end the season level on points with either side, which is now a very realistic possibility, they will be the ones lifting the trophy.

If Man City draw one and win five of their remaining six games, and Arsenal win all four of theirs, both will end on 89 points, but Arsenal’s goal difference will give them the edge.

Arsenal’s current goal difference value is the highest they have ever recorded at any point in Premier League history.

With four games remaining, it does seem unlikely that they will match Man City’s record of +79, set in 2017-18, but unless they suffer any big defeats, they will end the season on the highest total in Arsenal history.

Arsenal ended last season with a difference of +45. The Invincibles side who last won the title ended the 2003-04 season with a total of +47, and +51 a season later.

If Arsenal can add five more goals to this difference in the final few games, they will enter the top 10 campaigns in Premier League history with regard to this total, and can overtake some of Manchester United and Chelsea’s title winning sides in the process.
