'I think it's a huge jump': Jamie Carragher reacts to Liverpool manager rumour he's now heard

Liverpool are currently in pursuit of a new manager to take the Reds reins after Jurgen Klopp steps down at the end of the season.

For months, we’ve had reports linking the Reds with the likes of Xabi Alonso and Ruben Amorim, but they never seemed to pick up much pace.

However, over the past couple of days, speculation emerged involving Liverpool and Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, which has seemingly been moving quickly.

On Tuesday, multiple reports came out claiming the Reds had made the 45-year-old their top target and that he ticked all of the club’s boxes.

The following day, speculation began picking up pace. TBR Football sources claimed that the Reds have decided to press ahead and discuss terms with the Dutch giants after speaking to Slot.

The Feyenoord’s boss enthusiasm apparently impressed Liverpool and FSG, as well as his knowledge and detailed plans in terms of the direction he would like the club to go.

With such strong speculation doing the rounds, pundits such as Jamie Carragher have been giving their thoughts on the prospect of Slot joining Liverpool.

What has Jamie Carragher said about Liverpool going for Arne Slot?

Carragher, speaking on Sky Sports, doesn’t seem overly convinced about the prospect, saying it’ll be a “huge jump” for Slot.

The Liverpool icon also believes that the Reds’ pursuit of the Feyenoord boss shows there aren’t many top managers on the market at present.

“From Feyenoord to Liverpool is a huge jump,” said Carragher.

“And I think it shows at this moment that there’s probably a dearth of real top managers out there, when you look at who Liverpool are going for.

“Initially it was Xabi Alonso – it’s only his first full season as a manager – then there was talk of Ruben Amorim from Sporting, who’s only 39. Now Arne Slot is the favourite.”

Carragher continued: “I don’t think it’s like Benitez coming in, or Klopp.

“Benitez coming in on the back of two LaLiga titles and a UEFA Cup, or Klopp winning a couple of league titles and getting to a Champions League final. Liverpool were actually in a different space then.

“That Liverpool team, certainly under Benitez that I was part of, we were the team trying to qualify for the top four. The same with Klopp when he came in.

“But Liverpool are in a different era now. They actually fancy themselves to challenge for the Premier League every season.

“Next season, in the Champions League they’d expect to get to the quarter-finals at least.

“I think it’s a huge jump but he’s obviously a great coach with a great track record so far. We’ll see.”

Carragher does have a point. If we look at the managers Liverpool have been linked with since Klopp’s announcement, only one has been in that very top tier of winning silverware in a top-five league.

However, Xabi Alonso has outlined his intention to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, so Liverpool are having to look elsewhere.

As good as Slot and Amorim have been, they’ve both been plying their trade outside of the top-five European leagues.

Meanwhile, De Zerbi might already be in the Premier League, but he’s not won silverware with Brighton.

Obviously that’s not to say Slot and Amorim can’t be a success in England. After all, Chelsea took a chance on Jose Mourinho from Porto, and that worked out alright for them.
