Ex-UK defence minister Wallace weighs future in tech after politics

Former British defence minister Ben Wallace is not planning to publish his memoirs after leaving the House of Commons, he told German press agency dpa on Thursday - and is instead considering his options in tech.

"I basically spent seven and a half years in a world of secrets. So I can't write anything," Wallace said.

Wallace was minister of state for security from 2016 until 2019, before he served as secretary of state for defence under former prime ministers Boris Johnson and Liz Truss and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Wallace resigned in August 2023 and said he did not plan to stand again for parliament in the upcoming general election.

Nowadays, there was no need for memoirs, as every interesting aspect has already been reported on, Wallace implied. "So I'm not going to do that. It's not my thing."

The outgoing Member of Parliament for Wyre and Preston North has other options in mind, he said. "I might look at setting up a fund to invest in tech, European tech, defence and security technology across Europe, because we need to invest in those new capabilities. Otherwise, the only people investing will be the Americans."

The other future possibility would be doing something completely different, Wallace said.

"I like my sport of horse racing, things like that."
