David Ornstein shares whether Liverpool are now thinking about selling Darwin Nunez this summer

Few people in Liverpool’s squad are catching the heat that Darwin Nunez is currently feeling.

The Reds’ No.9 has been a divisive figure at the club ever since arriving from Benfica in 2022.

However, having struggled throughout his debut season last year, Nunez had initially improved markedly in 2023/24.

The goals were starting to flow a little more easily, he was picking up plenty of assists and affecting games positively on a weekly basis. But somewhere along the line of the last few weeks, Nunez has regressed once more.

With Liverpool struggling badly to put the ball in the net, the 24-year-old has been the main culprit. And now, with his high-profile misses becoming seemingly more commonplace, chatter has begun that Nunez could be sold this summer.

Will Liverpool sell Darwin Nunez

It should be remembered that Nunez was an incredibly cost piece of business for FSG. All told, his transfer could reach up to £85m.

With the reputation he currently has, there’s no way that the Reds would be able to recoup that in the market this summer. Nevertheless, there’s perhaps an argument for Liverpool cutting their losses and brining in a more clinical forward. Maybe someone like Victor Osimhen.

Speaking to fans in a Q&A for The Athletic yesterday though, journalist David Ornstein said that it would be a surprise if the Reds did decide to part way with Darwin.

“I very much doubt Nunez will be leaving,” Ornstein reports. “Whatever you think of his form recently, he has shown himself to be a good player for club and country, he is still young, Liverpool wouldn’t make any / much profit from selling him now and there is clear potential, in my opinion, for him to have a successful career at Anfield.

“Now, if suitable offers come in for pretty much any player it’s only natural that Edwards, Hughes and anyone else in their positions – and at board and ownership level – will consider them.

“But that doesn’t mean they will be accepted and there are no signs that dramatic revolution is on the way for Liverpool… more likely smart and necessary evolution.”

Should Liverpool bring in a new forward

If Nunez is going nowhere – and in our opinion that’s a good decision by the way – then maybe Liverpool can bring him in a little bit of help.

Of course, plenty will depend on the future of Mohamed Salah here. But with Mo massively off the boil at the minute, a big money offer from Saudi Arabia may be too good to turn down this time.

If that does happen, then Liverpool will have to bring in someone who can get them at least 20 goals per season. Nunez could still be that player, but you’d imagine the Reds might want more of a sure thing.

Osimhen may be an interesting shout in that respect, although the Napoli forward would command a huge price-tag. Instead, maybe Liverpool will look at someone like Eintracht Frankfurt’s Omar Marmoush.

Let’s wait and see but if Nunez is sticking around, let’s get him some help to get the best out of him.
