Ellis Bastable and Robert Morton Junior from Newark competed in the East Midlands boxing championships

Two Newark schoolboys fought in the East Midlands finals for the Lions Den Amateur Boxing Club which is run by Robert Morton Senior and Clownes Steel Senior out of Carl Greaves’ gym.

Ellis Bastable put in a good shift in his final but came up short as he narrowly lost on a 3-2 split decision against Owen Stokes.

14-year-old Robert Morton Junior won his final on a 4-1 split decision in the 52kg class.

The former national finalist has now become the East Midlands champion on three seperate occasions and is on the England Development programme.

“Robert started boxing when he was 10 years old,” said his father and trainer, Robert Senior.

“I never wanted him to box.

“I wanted him to play football but he took himself to the gym and has never looked back since.

“He will be boxing in the quarter-finals of the nationals this Sunday.”
