‘Very clever’… Andy Cole says he loved playing with ‘immaculate’ former Aston Villa star

Andy Cole has named a former Aston Villa star as a player he absolutely loved playing with during his impressive career.

Cole netted 265 goals in 600 games during a career that spanned across 12 different clubs, including Manchester United, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Fulham.

In his prime, the Englishman was among the most lethal finishers to have graced the Premier League.

Unfortunately, Villa fans never saw Cole don the famous claret and blue jersey, but that hasn’t stopped him from lauding one of the club’s former players.

Cole joined Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer on the Rest is Football Podcast on Friday to discuss his impressive career in depth.

Listening to three of this country’s elite goalscoring was pretty compelling.

Lineker was quick to quiz the former Manchester United forward on who his favourite strike partners were. After Peter Beardsley, Cole couldn’t look further than former Villan, Dwight Yorke.

He explained: “I’ve been very lucky. Peter, we’ve spoken about, but Yorky was just a breath of fresh air. The way Yorky plays football with a big smile on his face, very clever and his first touch was immaculate. I knew if he got on the half-turn, he would slip me in.

“He was big when Manchester United bought him. When the manager brought him in, it was absolutely massive.”

Just how good was Dwight Yorke for Aston Villa?

Of course, Yorke made a name for himself during his time at Old Trafford under the stewardship of Alex Ferguson, but Villa Park was where his career began.

Graham Taylor first noticed Yorke during a tour of the West Indies in 1989 and was subsequently handed a trial. After coming through the youth system, he became a regular feature during a nine-year stint in the West Midlands.

His record for Villa cannot be questioned. His 84 goals in 262 appearances means he’s only two behind record scorers Gabby Agbonlahor and Peter Withe.

With Ollie Watkins on 69, there’s every chance of Villa’s current hero etching himself into the club’s folklaw very soon.
