‘We are all aware’: Ollie Palmer says why Wrexham want to beat Stockport County more than ever

Wrexham host Stockport County in the season finale in League Two. The fixture itself has nothing riding on it as both sides had their promotions confirmed but Ollie Palmer has revealed his motivation behind winning.

When the fixtures were drawn up at the start of the season, many expected Wrexham vs Stockport County to be a promotion shootout.

Stockport were expected to challenge for the title after losing in the play-off final last season while Phil Parkinson‘s men had ambitions of achieving back-to-back promotions.

Instead, both sides wrapped up their destiny before it could get to the final game and now, Wrexham are looking to break a six-year record in League Two for most goals scored at home in a season.

That isn’t their only motivation behind winning, though, with striker Ollie Palmer revealing another reason.

Ollie Palmer issues rivalry claim with Stockport County

Since arriving as a club record transfer in January 2022, Palmer has played a huge role in their rapid rise.

The 32-year-old’s partnership with Paul Mullin helped fire Wrexham to the National League title last term however, his role this season has come predominantly from the bench, scoring six goals in 32 appearances.

Ahead of their clash against this weekend, Palmer is more motivated to win than ever following Dave Challinor’s “disrespectful” comments in the past.

“There’s rivalry with Stockport, their manager has been disrespectful to our club in the past and we are all aware of that,” said the frontman.

“They have won the league so credit to them, well done, but we have both achieved the same thing at the end of the day and we have done it back-to-back.

“What we have done is incredible. Only a couple of teams have done back-to-back promotions.”

What were Dave Challinor’s disrespectful comments?

Stockport pipped Wrexham to the National League title in the 2021/22 campaign, winning the league by six points.

It looked for a while that Parkinson’s men would win the title after going top on goal difference with one match remaining but they were beaten to the title after Stockport won their game in hand before victory on the final day.

Returning to the Football League after 11 years was a cause for celebration. However, County manager Challinor took those celebrations too far by singing “F*** you Wrexham” after pipping them to the title.

Understandably, the disrespect shown in that situation hasn’t been forgotten by the Hollywood-owned club and Palmer has rightfully picked it out as fuel to beat them this weekend.
