'A clear understanding': Parkinson shares update on Wrexham transfer budget ahead of the summer

All the talk engulfing Wrexham following promotion has been how much money they’re going to spend as Phil Parkinson supplies the latest update.

Wrexham are riding on a crest following their promotion to League One.

Back-to-back triumphs would have been unthinkable years ago when the Reds were trapped in the National League, but fast forward to the present day, and many people think Phil Parkinson‘s men can complete three promotions in a row.

There is no doubt that once the dust settles on their League Two campaign, Wrexham are in for their hardest challenge yet as the Reds prepare for their first season in the third tier since 2005.

Parkinson has already admitted that the jump to League One will be a massive one and plenty of surgery to their squad will be required this summer.

With a huge budget at their disposal thanks to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, Wrexham will no doubt be looking towards the top end of the division.

Phil Parkinson has discussed Wrexham budget with Humphrey Ker

The beauty of sealing promotion early, instead of leaving it to the final day, gives Wrexham a head start on those clubs who still have something to play for, whether that is chasing promotion or looking to avoid relegation.

It means that planning for next season is already underway and Parkinson has held discussions with sporting director Shaun Harvey and executive director Humphrey Ker about next season’s budget.

Speaking to BBC Sport Wales, Parkinson said: “There’s a lot going on as you can imagine.

“But we’re focused on this weekend first and then we take stock of the situation and move into the summer with a clear plan of what we need to do.

“Humphrey’s been over here as well and I’ve had a good chat with him this week and obviously budgets are still being finalised for us to go forward.

“But we’ve got a clear understanding of what we need to be competitive next year.

“There’s a situation of having a limit of numbers and we’ve already got a lot of players signed up to contracts.

“So it’s about sitting down, like we’ve done this week, having chats and making the decisions which we feel are fair but that will benefit the club going forward in what is going to be an exciting season.”

Wrexham don’t need to spend big to be successful

Many are expecting McElhenney and Reynolds to unload their war chest of funds in League One.

Wrexham certainly boast the financial muscles to flex against their divisional rivals, but history suggests you don’t need to spend big to become successful in the third tier.

Luton Town rose the divisions by being savvy with their transfer dealings, picking up experienced players on free transfers or shopping for bargains in the market and looking at loans from the Premier League.

This type of strategy can work if the club has a strong knowledge of players in the football pyramid as finding a gem in the window can be more effective than paying over the odds for a player.

Wrexham’s profile currently makes them an attractive proposition to join, so they shouldn’t have an issue bringing quality players in, it’s just about whether they flex their budget to do so.
