'It's the truth': Kieran McKenna shares why he believes Ipswich can finish above Leeds in second place

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is confident his side can finish in second place above Leeds United and has explained why in his latest press conference.

Going into the weekend, Leeds sit in second place and have the chance to go four points clear of The Tractor Boys with Daniel Farke‘s men taking on QPR on Friday night. Ipswich play on Saturday evening.

Leeds go into the game after seeing off an in-form Middlesbrough on Monday. Just four days later and Leeds are forced to travel away from Elland Road again, which has irritated manager Farke this week.

Ipswich meanwhile last played on April 13, a whole fortnight without any action. Coventry’s presence in The FA Cup semi-final saw Ipswich’s clash against Mark Robins’ side moved until next Tuesday night.

Speaking ahead of his side’s trip to Hull, Ipswich bossMcKenna explained why he feels confident his side can win second spot from Leeds. All Ipswich need to do is win to get second, it remains in their hands.

The Ipswich manager also told his press conference that he has not been watching Leeds as he doesn’t like to pay any attention on the clubs in and around Ipswich.

Kieran McKenna on why he’s confident Ipswich finish above Leeds

“It’s the truth I don’t watch the teams in and around us. I don’t put emotional energy into that. There’s been lots of games that can involve us, but I don’t tend to spend any energy on that,” McKenna said.

“We knew going into a two-week break without a game that the situation would be different. On the other hand, we know the position we’re in is in our control. We can look forward to a great week ahead.

“We’re going to have to work and fight really hard to get three positive results, but we believe we are capable of doing that. Our whole focus has been on giving us the best chance to get off to a good start.”

Why Leeds should also feel confident going into the weekend

Mentality and belief at this stage in the season are massive. So if Leeds can open up a four-point gap on Ipswich before McKenna’s men play next, then the pressure on them to beat Hull is absolutely enormous.

Leeds face a QPR side that have been woeful at home while Leeds have been strong away from home during 2023-24. But Ipswich go to sixth-placed Hull who secured a huge win over Coventry in the week.

Hull will prove a tough test for Ipswich and Leeds fans can testify to that, The Whites drawing on both occasions against Liam Rosenior’s side. A hugely exciting weekend that could determine who gets second.
