Students occupy Paris university building during Palestine protest

Students at the renowned French university Sciences Po have blockaded a building in Paris in protest against their university's stance on the Middle East conflict.

The university announced on Friday that some 60 protesters were in the building in the centre of the French capital. The main entrances were blocked. Videos showed one entrance barricaded with rubbish bins and bars.

The students displayed banners which included a call on the university to cut ties with all Israeli universities.

The university management received a delegation of protesting students on Friday in order to find a solution to the conflict. The university said it strongly condemned the students' actions.

Several neighbouring buildings also remained closed on Friday due to the protest. Courses were moved online.

There have also been pro-Palestinian protests at universities in the United States recently. Several elite universities have been cracking down on protests about the Gaza war for days. Students have been detained for refusing to end unauthorized protests.

Some of the protesters are accused of anti-Semitism and trivializing the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, which has the eradication of Israel as one of its stated goals.

Hamas triggered the Gaza war with its massacres and hostage-taking in Israel on October 7.
