Journalist shares how Ruben Amorim has reacted after seeing Liverpool make their move for Arne Slot

Liverpool look like they’re moving for Feyenoord’s Arne Slot and that’s apparently left Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim scratching his head.

The Reds are reportedly close to an agreement to bring Slot to Anfield as they finally get their man to replace Jurgen Klopp.

Of course, Slot’s appointment means that Liverpool have moved on from a number of candidates mentioned earlier in the process.

Xabi Alonso was the first choice initially before deciding to stay in Germany. From there, Sporting coach Amorim emerged as a strong favourite.

However, Slot’s impending appointment has shunted Amorim away from the job, and according to journalist Miguel Delaney, the reaction hasn’t been a good one inside Amorim’s camp.

Ruben Amorim and camp left stunned after Liverpool decision on Arne Slot

Writing in his latest newsletter for The Independent, Delaney has suggested there has been an element of shock from Amorim and his team over Slot going to Liverpool.

“The last few days have seen Liverpool’s interest in Feyenoord’s Arne Slot confirmed, and Xavi deciding to stay at Barcelona. Both were unexpected, particularly by Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim. Those close to the boss had felt he was the leading candidate for both jobs. He had been the most admired manager after Xabi Alonso,” Delaney writes.

“That does leave a hugely exciting manager that is possibly available for the summer, although with job openings that have suddenly been that bit more limited. It perhaps explains this week’s leak that Amorim had spoken to West Ham United. That is understood to have actually taken place a month ago.”

Michael Edwards must have good reason for Arne Slot call

The idea of Liverpool bringing back Michael Edwards was to ensure that the process to replace Jurgen Klopp went as well as possible.

With that, there is a trust placed in Edwards and new sidekick Richard Hughes to make the right call and that’s been left to them to make.

Of course, there is no smoke without fire and Amorim must have, at some point, been close to the job.

However, it seems like Arne Slot has ticked most of the boxes Liverpool wanted and right now, he’s on course to land one of the biggest jobs in football.

It will all come out in the wash at some point. But Amorim must be wondering what’s gone wrong.
