Oregon Ducks redshirt freshman defensive lineman Johnny Bowens III plans to enter the transfer portal, according to a Friday morning report from Hayes Fawcett of On3 Sports. The former four-star recruit signed with the Ducks as a member of the 2023 class out of Judson High School in Texas after earning Adidas All-American distinction during his high school career.
The 6-foot-3, 295-pound lineman appeared in just three games during his time at Oregon and recorded two tackles. Judson was formerly committed to the Texas A&M Aggies prior to backing off that pledge and committing to Dan Lanning and the Ducks.
He was viewed by some as an up-and-coming talent on Tony Tuioti’s defensive line that looks to replace a slew of departures from a season ago including Brandon Dorlus, Casey Rogers and Popo Aumavae. The Ducks also added Houston transfer Jamaree Caldwell this offseason, who should be a major contributor in their first season in the Big Ten.
Lanning and his coaching staff haven’t ruled out adding more players in the spring transfer portal window, with former Michigan State defensive lineman Derrick Harmon a main name to watch after entering the portal for a second time this spring.
Bowens is the second Oregon player to enter the transfer portal this spring following reserve offensive lineman Michael Wooten, who entered on April 8.
Dan Lanning and the Ducks signed another slew of promising defensive line prospects in their historic 2024 recruiting class. All-Americans Aydin Breland, Elijah Rushing and Jericho Johnson highlight a bunch that also includes Xadavien Sims, Tionne Gray, andJaxson Jones.
