Brendan Rodgers has his say on the controversial Dens Park pitch ahead of Celtic visit to Dundee

The pitch at Dens Park has been one of the most talked about topics in Scottish football over the last couple of months after a series of postponements left the SPFL scrambling for solutions.

Drainage problems and a wet spring combined to leave parts of the grass sodden and unsuitable for professional football.

A Dundee match at home to Rangers was postponed twice, while the third attempt required specialist pitch consultants to come in and deliver their view on whether it was playable amidst threats of moving the fixture to another venue.

While that game eventually went ahead with no issues, understandably, some Celtic fans might be concerned about the surface with the league leaders set to visit on Sunday.

For Brendan Rodgers however, it’s not much of a problem.

Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on the Dundee pitch

Asked if the pitch has come into his thinking during preparations this week, the Bhoys boss said in a media conference on Friday [Celtic FC YouTube]: “Not really, no. I watched some of the Rangers game. I actually thought it needed a bit of watering on there to be fair. It doesn’t [come into my thinking].

“I have to say, in all my time over the two spells when I’ve been to Dundee, the pitch has always been in a really, really good place.

“I did go up there earlier in the season to see Cammy Kerr’s testimonial game, I think it was around about September time – it was a little bit slippy at that point and that was earlier on in the season.

“I don’t have any worries about it. The weather has been good and I’m sure if it needs a little bit of water they can stick that on there.”

Weather forecast indicates no late drama for Celtic vs Dundee

The weather forecast across Tayside over the weekend shows little chance of heavy rain, so there should be no late deluge that causes Dundee to once again be left with a pitch embarrassment.

Celtic kick-off on Sunday at 3pm and although the surface may not be perfectly pristine, there can be no excuses when it comes to securing the three points.

Rodgers is already avoiding flagging it as an issue, unlike other managers, so hopefully it’s not even a consideration for the players.
