Queen Mary pictured wearing stunning emerald tiara in new royal portrait with King Frederik

Queen Mary has been pictured wearing a stunning emerald tiara in a new royal portrait with King Frederik.

The Danish royal palace released the first official portrait of King Frederik and Queen Mary since Frederik’s accession to the throne.

It also marks the first time the Queen has worn the Danish Emerald Parure tiara as it is exclusively reserved for the Queen.

The tiara was first commissioned in 1840 by King Christian VII for his wife, Caroline Matilda of England, and the jewels in the headpiece are believed to have been in the family since 1723.

The emerald set is made up of a glittering tiara with a matching necklace and earrings.

The set also includes a brooch but Mary decided to wear a pin with a portrait of Frederik made especially for her.

The Queen also wore a dark green velvet and lace gown designed by Copenhagen designer Birgit Hallstein who has previously dressed Mary.

Smiling shoulder-to-shoulder with the Queen, Frederik wore his military uniform showing multiple medals.

The King and Queen both displayed the Order of the Elephant on chains around their necks.

The Order of the Elephant is Denmark’s highest honour and is typically given to children of the monarch and their spouses.

The portrait was taken in the Green Room in the Royal Reception Rooms at Christiansborg Palace by photographer Steen Evald.

It will be hung in state institutions including Danish embassies and consulates.
