How about a mid-afternoon commitment to get the weekend off to a hot start? Mark Pope and his staff flew out to Las Vegas to meet with San Diego State guard Lamont Butler and left with a commitment.

KSR’s Matt Jones was the first to break the news.

Butler averaged 9.3 points, 3.0 assists and 2.6 rebounds per game for the Aztecs in 2023-24. A four-year player at SDSU, the 6-2 guard earned 102 total starts and was a crucial piece in the team’s run to the national championship game a year ago. He hit the buzzer-beater against Florida Atlantic in the Final Four to advance to the title matchup vs. UConn.

“My last 4 years at San Diego State has been a dream come true,” Butler wrote Wednesday night when entering the portal. “We’ve been able to accomplish so much in my time here. I will forever cherish the memories I made in an Aztec jersey. I’ve made lifelong friendships and was gifted with a brotherhood that no one can take away from me. Thank you to the Show and the amazing fans for your support.

“Thank you to my coaches for allowing me to be an intricate member of this program. Thank you to my teammates for helping me grow as a person and always being there for me. Thank you to the city of San Diego for embracing my family and I. San Diego will always be my home! With that being said I will explore my opportunities by entering into the transfer portal while keeping the option to return to San Diego State.”

The Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year scored 1,008 points and totaled 338 assists and 305 rebounds across his career in San Diego.

Now, he’ll be taking his talents to Lexington.
