Aachen to play professional football for first time in 11 years

The traditional German club Alemannia Aachen will play in a professional football league for the first time in 11 years.

Aachen celebrated the fourth division title from the couch on Friday, as second-placed Wuppertaler SV were defeated 2-1 by Fortuna Köln.

With three games left this season, Wuppertaler can't reach leaders Aachen, who top the table with 69 points ahead of their match against FC Bocholt on Saturday.

By winning the title, Aachen also secured promotion to the third division, the lowest-level professional league in German football.

Their last season in professional football was in the third division in 2012-13. Their last participation in the Bundesliga was in 2006-07.

Aachen were the Bundesliga runners-up in 1969, when record champions Bayern Munich claimed their first title. Their most recent achievement was reaching the German Cup final in 2004, when they were defeated by Werder Bremen.
