Former Apple employee finally reveals whether closing your apps degrades your iPhone battery

A former Apple employee addressed the long-held belief that closing the open apps on your iPhone degrades and erodes your battery health.

As a former employee of the tech giant, Tyler Morgan (@hitomidocameraroll) is no stranger to sharing behind-the-scenes tips and tricks. Just recently, he demystified the trade-in process while also sharing hacks that few iPhone users know about.

Does closing apps make your battery worse?

Taking to his TikTok account on Thursday, Tyler addressed concerns in a video that has since garnered nearly 700k views and 50k likes. He said that a lot of followers had reached out to him to ask about a recent viral story.

“Closing the app itself is not going to slow down your iPhone, they just phrase it that way to grab your attention. What is actually happening is, whenever you close an app, thinking it’s going to make your phone faster, it’s not going to do s**t,” he said.

“The reason it’s so bad for your battery is when you close an app, you have to then reopen it which requires a larger amount of power.”

Tyler said that the odd close is not going to destroy your battery that significantly, however, you should refrain from getting into the nasty habit of closing and opening an app on repeat. This will wreck your device.

“When your recently used apps appear, the apps aren’t open, but they’re in standby mode to help you navigate and multitask,” Apple previously said.

His message was lost on his followers

Though most of Tyler’s fans understood the logic behind his statement, most of them refused to leave their apps open on standby.

One person wrote: “Dude I need to free up my ram not my fault Apple is a cheapstake and does not include more RAM in their phones.”

“I close an app as I leave it. That’ll never change I hate having more than 3 tabs open at a time,” another person said, as a third added, “I’m an elder millennial… I’ve been using an iPhone for 17 years and I remember this being such a huge deal. I still do it.”

“I close everything at the end of the day and call it good,” someone else added.
